Featured Seller Ljlhdesigns by Libby!

I recently purchased a pair of acrylic purple houndstooth earrings from this featured seller and it was a wonderful experience. She is very talented and quick! My package arrived a few days after I purchased the earrings through her site on Etsy,
It came in a sturdy shipping box and was packaged with black tissue paper and a cute pink box! Love it! My earrings are fabulous and I love wearing them! So up for a feature on my blog is Libby owner and creator of ljlhdesigns.

1. Tell us about how you got started making paper jewelry?I got to know someone on Twitter who makes traditional paper beads. After knowing her a while, one day I really looked at her beads and thought “How can I make this my own and possibly better?” I already had paper from making handmade boxes. There was a particular paper I had in mind to start my experiments with. So I started cutting and rolling paper in different ways. Then I started to venture out into different types of papers and started combining more findings and beads with the paper. It just keeps snowballing and snowballing.

2. Does your work require any special types of paper? If so what is it?
The type of paper I use depends on the design and overall look I want to achieve. I’ve learned that different types of paper act in different ways. Handmade papers don’t push out as smoothly as quilling papers. So I have to consider this when making a piece. I’m currently getting used to how different papers adhere to the acrylic pieces I’ve been working with lately. Some stick better than others. I have also started to work with scrapbook paper recently, but have found it really works the best with the acrylic pieces. Most of it is too stiff to roll, bend, and fold for my purposes.

3. Tell us about your work environment.
My work area is super small and crowded. And I’m not just saying that. It is! I recently bought a metal, wall mounted, towel rack at IKEA that is perfect for my paper rolls. I work on a decent size drawing/craft table, but half of it is covered with beads and tools because I have no place else to put them. I can’t wait til we get a bigger place. Whenever that will be.

4. I know that you do craft shows, how did you get started in those?
I’ve only done one so far. I will be doing my first of this season on March 20th. I found out about my first show through my Etsy team. Joining the team has been the biggest benefit in finding shows.

Blue, Brown, Dots and Flowers Handmade Box

5. I love your handmade boxes! When did you start making those?
I took a bookmaking class in college and the class also taught how to make handmade boxes. I instantly got addicted! I have about 100 boxes right now. I’ve been making them for the past 5-6 years so I have amassed quite a few. The box I made for my final project of the class, I don’t think I could ever part with it. Plus it would cost someone about $700.00 if they wanted to buy it. :)

6. Do you sell on any other craft websites or just Etsy?
I also have my main website that showcases all my creative endeavors.
7. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years (business wise)
Being successful with my jewelry. It has been a slow start, but is gradually picking up. I hope to be busy enough that I need an assistant. I really just someone to boss around. lol (I’m kidding) I’ve always envisioned a retail store of my own. But we’ll see….

8. Do you have a favorite piece of jewelry that you have made? If so tell us why!
The first brooch I made holds a special place in my heart. There is just something about it that I love. As much as I love it, I can’t wait until it sells. When someone buys a piece that I really love, it really validates what I do.

White and Silver Paper with Red Glass Beads Earrings

9. Are there any techniques that you have been wanting to try?
I keep considering resin, but it is just so smelly and temperamental. I want to make rings and have been considering using the resin to cast them, but I don’t know. I’ve looked into casting epoxy too.

10. Where do you find your inspiration?
From other artists work. My goal is never to copy someone. That is wrong. But I like to look at other art and think “I can make that my own with the materials I use.” I believe none of us hold all the great ideas and it is important to learn from others. My beads and paper are also inspiring. The shape of a bead or finding can give me a great idea. The patterns on paper also help me to come up with different designs.

New items and new metals! Find out why...

I am now working with 14K Gold Filled wire and Argentium Silver. Here is a sneak peek at my new pieces! I will be posting more items (including rings and necklaces) so make sure you check my shop often!

Here's a run down on the new materials I am working with!

Argentium silver is a newer alloy that is highly tarnish resistant, purer, brighter and more versatile than sterling silver. It contains the metal germanium as a base instead of copper. Germanium is an alloy that loves oxygen making Argentium silver highly resistant to tarnishing!

Pieces made using Argentium silver will last longer and shine brighter than Sterling silver. The Argentium that I use in .930 instead of .925, which means there is more actual silver in the wire.

14K Gold fill is tarnish resistant, longer lasting and NOT plated! Gold fill undergoes a special heating process that bonds the gold to the under lying sterling silver or jewelers brass core. Plated gold does not under go this process and as a result has a tendency to tarnish and wear off. Gold fill is known to have heirloom quality to it, meaning it won't tarnish and wear off! The gold that I use is 14/20 meaning in contains 5% pure gold, that's 100 times more gold than plated!

All of my jewelry comes hand made and in special gift boxes! Feel free to contact me with questions or special requests!
