Preparing for Pediatric Stroke Awareness Day...May 1, 2010

Pediatric Stroke. A subject I hold close to my heart. Did you know that children and even babies have strokes? Don't feel bad if you don't...I didn't either until my son became one of those babies. He was born in June 2007 and had his stroke during the delivery.

Babies often don't get diagnosed until they show signs of difficulty. In my sons case he started having seizures the day after he was born. He was airlifted to another hospital where they ran several tests and discovered he had a stroke. We were so scared. It's hard to type this actually, I'm getting a bit choked up. They told us he may never walk, may not follow directions, may have cerebral palsy, may have seizures for the rest of his life, may have more strokes! You can only imagine how scared we were for our little boy.

Thankfully he has suffered very little if any ill effects from it, he's one of the lucky ones. Many children are not so lucky and some even lose their lives. It's not something that people talk about and it's beyond time to change that.

Do you know the signs of a child who has had or is having a stroke? Do you know what to do if you think your child is having a stroke? Here is some information taken from The National Stroke Association website.

Children often have very similar symptoms to adults which include:
  • a severe headache -- often the first complaint
  • speech difficulties
  • eye movement problems
  • numbness
Use the following tool to help you think F.A.S.T.:

FACE Ask the child to smile.
Does one side of the face droop?
ARMS Ask the child to raise both arms.
Does one arm drift downward?
SPEECH Ask the child to repeat a simple sentence.
Are the words slurred?  Can the patient repeat the sentence correctly?
TIME If the child shows any of these symptoms, time is important. Call 911 or get to the hospital fast. Brain cells are dying.

Please visit the National Stroke Association pediatric section here for more information.

Last year we started having a small fundraiser, here in Eau Claire, for the Pediatric Stroke Network.  Although are plans for this year are still in the works I look forward to continuing to help raise awareness.

I make jewelry and donate 10% off the profits to PSN. You can find the jewelry here:

Stay tuned for more on this years Pediatric Stroke Awareness Day. Thank you for visiting my blog! Happy Spring!!

1 Year Etsyversary Extravaganza!!

Wow I can't believe it! March 28th I will have officially been on Etsy for 1 year! I have grown and expanded so much in such a short amount of time and I'm excited to see what the future will bring!

When I first joined Etsy I was pretty clueless as to how it all worked. I had poor photos, a boring banner and products that needed some tweaking. I had also found out 1 month before that I was pregnant with my second child!! Yay! Now here I sit one year later with a 5 month old drooling on my keyboard and a 2 year old licking hummus from the container!

I have changed my backdrop many times, adjusted the lighting and the angles from which I photograph my pieces. They aren't perfect yet but they are getting there! My jewelry has gone from super simple (a bead on a headpin) to hand formed ear wires, wire wrapped briolettes and funky upcycled pieces! I am much happier with the direction that I am headed with my designs.

So to celebrate my 1 year Etsyversary here at BailyBelle Creations I am having a big sale!

*I'm bringing back the BOGO 1/2 off sale PLUS get a free ring with each purchase! So if you buy 2 things you get one 1/2 off and 2 copper Aventurine Nested Rings!*

Since opening my jewelry shop I have expanded into photography and vintage! If you haven't already make sure you check out these shops!
