Preparing for Pediatric Stroke Awareness Day...May 1, 2010

Pediatric Stroke. A subject I hold close to my heart. Did you know that children and even babies have strokes? Don't feel bad if you don't...I didn't either until my son became one of those babies. He was born in June 2007 and had his stroke during the delivery.

Babies often don't get diagnosed until they show signs of difficulty. In my sons case he started having seizures the day after he was born. He was airlifted to another hospital where they ran several tests and discovered he had a stroke. We were so scared. It's hard to type this actually, I'm getting a bit choked up. They told us he may never walk, may not follow directions, may have cerebral palsy, may have seizures for the rest of his life, may have more strokes! You can only imagine how scared we were for our little boy.

Thankfully he has suffered very little if any ill effects from it, he's one of the lucky ones. Many children are not so lucky and some even lose their lives. It's not something that people talk about and it's beyond time to change that.

Do you know the signs of a child who has had or is having a stroke? Do you know what to do if you think your child is having a stroke? Here is some information taken from The National Stroke Association website.

Children often have very similar symptoms to adults which include:
  • a severe headache -- often the first complaint
  • speech difficulties
  • eye movement problems
  • numbness
Use the following tool to help you think F.A.S.T.:

FACE Ask the child to smile.
Does one side of the face droop?
ARMS Ask the child to raise both arms.
Does one arm drift downward?
SPEECH Ask the child to repeat a simple sentence.
Are the words slurred?  Can the patient repeat the sentence correctly?
TIME If the child shows any of these symptoms, time is important. Call 911 or get to the hospital fast. Brain cells are dying.

I make jewelry and donate 10% off the profits to PSN. You can find the jewelry here: BailyBelleCreations.etsy.com

  1. I don't have children but I have 4 step-children. I can't in my wildest dreams imagine how helpless that would make you feel. Keep reminding me and as soon as we get through Purple Day I will start promoting May 1 in my Awareness Treasuries.
