Oxidizing Experiment Using Eggs

I recently read that oxidizng silver works by using EGGS!! Well, since I have been waiting to oxidize my jewelry until I could find a way to keep the chemical smell away from the kids I found this idea promising! So I decided to try it out. Here's what I did.

Step one.
Make some pretty jewelry and then boil two eggs.

Step two.
After the eggs have boiled peel off the shell, eat the whites and then mash up the yolks and place them in an airtight container.

Step three.
Some people use wire hanging racks to use for holding the jewels but I decided to try placing the earrrings on top of some paper towel. Don't let the jewelry touch the eggs, they will oxidize quickly and unevenly.

I am trying some of my Argentium Silver hoops and some copper earrings.

Step four.
Close the container and wait. I've heard that it could take up to 1 day to get the right look. I'll be checking on these throughout today.

When the earrings are oxidized, clean them with a mild soap. Then use a buffing cloth to shine some of it for added depth.

That's it! Easy, cheap and eco-friendly! Good luck and have fun with this!

*Note: It's been about 15 minutes and I'm already seeing results!!

  1. I love that eggs will do that!

I tried it once, and of course let the eggs touch the jewelry, but now I know what I did wrong. Your earrings in the post above came out awesome! :)

  2. I've enjoyed my little stroll down your blog page. Thank you for letting me visit.

  3. hey! you know what else works? at least for me it did, i accidentally oxidized a silver ring of mine by going in a natural hot spring. entire ring turned black :( but i'm about to fix it using toothpaste. apparently my friend says it works so it's worth a try.
