decoupage with fabric

Summer craft shows are coming up quickly and although I'm only signed on for one so far I am always looking for fun display ideas. Recently, I added headbands to my Etsy shop and needed a fun way to display them at shows. Not wanting to just lay them flat on the table I was searching for something pretty and functional.
Here is what I came up with.

Decoupaged Head.
How to create your own.

You will need the following items:
-Styrofoam head
-Thick paint brush
-Scissors
-Mod Podge
-Fabric or Paper (I used fabric for this project)
-Wax paper
-Dish with water

Materials

Step One:

Lay all your materials out and start cutting or ripping your fabric pieces.
I cut mine in small strips that varied in size.
Next, mix small amount of water and Mod Podge
together to create a liquid paste.

Liquid paste.

Step Two:

Take one of your small strips of fabric and lay it face down
on the wax paper. Brush the back side with the liquid
paste mix until it's completely soaked.

Brush your fabric with paste until soaked.

Step Three:

Brush liquid paste on the head in the area you want to lay the fabric onto.
Then place the fabric face up and smooth it down with your brush until
all edges are laying flat and there are no bubbles.

Covering the head.

Step four:

Continue the process until the entire surface is covered and smooth.
Then, let the head dry overnight. I placed her on a cookie sheet with
wax paper and set her somewhere my kids couldn't reach!
For this project I am choosing not to glaze the finished piece.

Drying

Finished Product!!!

All finished!
She will make a wonderful prop to display my headbands and when I'm not using her for shows I think she'll make a fine decor piece! I may even add a bow to her neckline for added character :)

Have fun with this project everyone!

xoxo

  5. Thanks for the tutorial! Quick question, if i do want to seal my Styrofoam head with something that won't get sticky if it gets damp or is in a humid climate, what would you recommend doing? Thanks!
