thursdays talent - batik

In this weeks talent post we are taking a look at Batik, which is a method of dying fabric or paper. I may do a future 'how to' post on this subject since I am becoming fascinated with this technique. Check out what these talented Etsy sellers are doing with Batik.

roughing it

I'm going to tell you a little secret, it's not very exciting but something many of you don't know about me. >> I love to write! << I know what you are thinking...."um, isn't that why you have a blog?" Well, yes but the truth of the matter is that I have not been using it the way I intended.

While on my mini vacation last weekend I did a little bit of soul searching and started writing again. I didn't get very far because it was an emotional piece but I have decided to share some of it with you.

Enjoy!

Tiger Cat Lake
...
Roughing It.
by Vanessa Hotchkiss

At least that’s what we used to call it. When going up north to Tiger Cat lake meant sleeping in tents or my grandparents’ old camper. Running water and bathrooms were luxuries we didn’t take for granted and our dinners were eaten out on the picnic table. A picnic table placed just outside the old bunkhouse where we used to keep fresh worms in a small refrigerator.

We’d spend afternoons down by the dock with a bucket of those worms and fishing poles made out of cane. My grandmother would sit in her lawn chair silently reading one of her stories and congratulating us on our catch. Bluegill and Perch, they may have been small but left lasting memories to pass on to my children.

Those days are gone just like the man who taught us all about roughing it. He was a tall and slender man who was brilliant with his words and stern with his teaching. He was my grandfather. I can remember the silly games we'd play and how he taught me many things about life by giving me a fishing pole. I miss those days as they have been taken over by grand houses, paved roads, showers!

The old smell of dirt and trees is still there and the sounds of the Loons are still sung every night, but where the old green camper used to stand is now a little oak tree. I'm happy about the tree but sad for the loss of what it really meant to go up north and rough it.
...

It probably isn't very good but it comes from the heart. Something that makes me happy and I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading it!

NOTE: This is an original work by me. Please do not re-post without my permission. Thank you.

reaching for success

Purple and Blue bracelet
Ok Etsy shop owners I've got a question for those of you who use social media to increase your shop views/sales. I'm a tweeter, facebooker, blogger and all around loudmouth so why can't I get more views to my shop through all those social media tools?

Like many of my fellow sellers our views are coming directly from Etsy and not from outside sources.
I would love to hear what those of you who have been successful using those tools have to say.

Any tips, tricks, do's and don'ts?
If you have any ideas you'd like to share please comment below!
Who know you may even get rewarded for sharing :)

NOTE: I've tried the giveaway, the sponsor spots, the promotion of other Etsy sellers...

Thank you kindly!
XOXO

blueberry picking

The drive was very pretty!
Last weekend we took the kids blueberry picking. So much fun, even though Sophia only lasted about 15 minutes! The fields were beautiful and the weather was perfect. We grabbed our buckets and headed to the best areas for picking.
Noah picking only the best berries!

Yum!!
We picked for maybe an hour or so and then headed to get them weighed. Ever wanted to know what close to 5 lbs of blueberries looks like...

That's a BIG bowl!
We froze about 7 cups and used the rest for a batch of muffins and for the kids to eat during the week. Gotta love summer! I don't want it to end.

XOXO

"My name is Michele and I am horrible at writing about myself, but I can tell you I am the mama of two boys that loves to collect vintage items. At some point I realized that I couldn't house all these great finds, but I still felt compelled to buy them, so I sought out a venue for which I could sell vintage. That is when Etsy came into my life. It has become a wonderful place to buy, sell and meet great people whom share the same joy in vintage and handmade that I do."
