Life. Sometimes it get's in the way.

Well, the title should say it all folks. I've been so busy the past few months my blog has become a neglected page with the taste of stale bread. Those of you who follow me on twitter or know me personally may know that I'm going through a divorce. Yes, that's right...the big D is happening here at bailybelle. Things business related have slowed down a bit the last few months so I could focus on the most important people in my life, my two children. Trying to make sure I maintain a healthy relationship with their father so they aren't caught in the middle of a messy divorce. Luckily, we have managed to keep things clean and simple for the most part and I'm happier than I've been in a very long time.

Life. Sometimes it get's in the way. Most of the time it makes us stronger, it just takes a minute to open our eyes to it. I had been unhappy for a very long time so this journey was a much needed one, and I'm coming out of it with my sense of self back!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me the last few months, my friends, family and fans are the best I could ask for. I love every single one of you!

bailybelle is going to be better and stronger than ever before. So get ready for some serious awesomeness! XOXO

Do you know the signs?

Today is Pediatric Stroke Awareness Day. A normal Saturday to most but for me it's a reminder that life is precious and every child is a miracle. It's been almost 5 years since Noah was born, 5 YEARS!! I can't believe that time has gone by so quickly.

Noah, my son, had a stroke during the delivery. It was a long and intense delivery and when he arrived he was blue. The cord was wrapped around his neck and he wasn't breathing. We were scared. After a few moments (what felt like an eternity) the nurses were able to get him breathing. His apgars were good but his breathing was fast and he was taken to the newborn intensive care area. I was only able to see him if I went down the hall, which was hard for me to do since the labor/delivery had been so hard, I was in a wheel chair for a week after he was born (he's lucky that big head of his is so darn cute)!

The day after Noah was born my husband noticed him making strange repetitive motions. The on-call Ped. Dr. was rushed in and before we knew it our world was turned upside down. Our little man was being air lifted to a Hospital in Rochester, MN that was better able to handle our "situation". To say we were terrified would be an understatement.

Noah, almost ready to go home.
We spent a week at that hospital, I was unable to nurse him for almost that long because he was on a tube. He had wires and iv's all over him. I remember when the Dr. who had been working with us came in to finally give us some answers, that moment will never fade. He said to us, "Noah has suffered a stroke." after those words it was like I had left my body. What did he just say? I don't understand.

They told us he may never walk, may never speak correctly or understand directions. They just weren't sure of the outcome because babies brains are still rapidly developing.

We were sent home with anti-seizure medications and instructions to call if we needed anything.

Well that was almost 5 years ago now and that little baby has grown into an amazing little boy. He's had 1 serious seizure at about 6 months of age, but has been off his medications for about 3 1/2 - 4years now. He can walk, talk, run, play, understands directions and is the most caring child I've ever known.  We are blessed to have him in our lives and he has taught us so many things. He was one of the lucky ones.

Take a moment to learn the signs below and then hug your children. Life is too short not too.
Information below taken from http://www.stroke.org/site/PageNavigator/PEDSTROKE

Childhood stroke symptoms are similar to those of adult stroke:
  • a severe headache -- often the first complaint
  • speech difficulties
  • eye movement problems
  • numbness

Use the following tool to help you think F.A.S.T.:
FACEAsk the child to smile.
Does one side of the face droop?
ARMSAsk the child to raise both arms.
Does one arm drift downward?
SPEECHAsk the child to repeat a simple sentence.
Are the words slurred?  Can the patient repeat the sentence correctly?
TIMEIf the child shows any of these symptoms, time is important. Call 911 or get to the hospital fast. Brain cells are dying.

The day was a long one for me and my husband, but so worth it! We got up at 4am that Saturday and were on the road by a little after 5am. My coffee break didn't arrive until we entered The Dells, WI which about 2 hours from our home...it was a looong drive.

Are you ready for a fabulous feature, celebrity news (did somebody say Cruise family) and a giveaway?! Holy smokies!!

I'm so excited to be able to share an interview with Jane the creator/designer behind Little Bug Jewelry. She's an artist, a runner, a mother and a great Twitter friend!

Introducing Little Bug Jewelry

Golden Rutilated quartz w/green tourmaline, sterling silver earrings
The birth of Little Bug Jewelry:
I started making jewelry in about 2005 after we moved to the Midwest, partly as a way to keep my hands busy during the long gray winters we get here.  I've always done something creative, writing, woodworking (which I wasn't very good at, but we do have a sad side table I made in our guest room), etc, but once I started making jewelry I was hooked!  Similar to many others, I started with beading, then started experimenting with wire wrapping and ultimately learned metalsmithing, which I am still learning everyday!  It was actually my Father in law, who is a dentist who got me into metal work.  He specializes in dental implants and they learn about wax carving and metal casting, and he starting doing soldering and metal casting as a hobby.  I haven't braved doing my own casting yet, though I have all the equipment, thanks to him, out in the garage.
I started 'officially' selling jewelry in 2007 when someone suggested I sell on Etsy, my first daughter was months old at the time and my nickname for her was 'Little Bug', hence the name of my shop :-).  My first year on Etsy I sold all of THREE things, but I'm stubborn and persisted!

A typical day at the Little Bug Studio:
There are no typical days really . . .I have a day job 3 days/week but am lucky enough to have 2 days a week for jewelry.  My best selling item is custom rings/ring stacks so usually I have those to work on.  On an average day I will hit the computer in the early am, to play, err . . .work on Twitter, etc, make some treasuries and catch up on communication.  Then I usually do fabrication/metal work the rest of the morning and in the afternoon, while the metalwork pieces are pickling, tumbling, etc, I will do stone setting on pieces that are complete, wire wrapping as needed, photographing, photoediting, packing up orders, and so on and so on!  When I have time, I work on one of a kind pieces.

The Process:
My design process is chaos essentially . . .really!  For ring stacks it is easy, they are usually precombined sets, or I do a lot of birthstone sets for people, it is fun to combine new color combos that I might not have come up with.  For the one of a kind piecs, etc . . .I don't usually start with much of an idea, it sounds a bit silly, but usually the stone I am working with kind of guides me.  Many times the finished piece ends up very different than it originally started out to be, I sometimes feel that the more I 'plan' a piece, the more likely it is to come out completely different than my original idea.

A favorite creation:

One of Jane's favorite pieces that she has created.

My current favorite piece in my shop is a raw pyrite necklace, which kind of epitomizes what I think of as my style, 'rustic glam'!

Where is Little Bug Jewelry headed?
5-10 years . . . I guess I don't know, I do know I will always do something creative!  Jewelry is an especially tough category to be in, there are a lot of us and the economy doesn't help.  But as long as I still get that thrill from making it, I'll keep doing it.

A Story:
Crystal Quartz Ring (SOLD)
Most of my stories come from the shows I have done, some funny, some cringe worthy.  I think one of the funniest was at a show with a piece that used to be in the other shop I had for a while (Raredesign, now re-combined with Littlebug) http://www.etsy.com/transaction/60987518, it was an attention grabbing piece for me on Etsy, but she picked it up, tried it on, then started rubbing at it saying "all it needs is a little polishing".  I THINK I managed to keep a straight face while I explained to her the oxidation process and that it was meant to be dark like that, but she didn't buy it so??
But mostly my customers are wonderful, and I love when they come back for more, it is the biggest compliment I can ask for.

A fun celebrity gifting:
I am part of a group called The Artisan Group and a gifting opportunity was available for the Tom Cruise family, and I was lucky enough to get a spot.  Creating a piece for katie Holmes was a challenge, she does not wear a lot of jewelry.  She has a very classic style, almost a modern day Audrey Hepburn.  Here is a perfect example of my design style going wrong, or right . . .My original plan was to do a very simple metalwork pendant with turquoise (her birthstone), so I ordered an oval piece of turquoise (about 13 X 18mm) and was going to do a very simple setting on a choker chain.  But one morning I was playing with a different piece of sleeping beauty turquoise, and started to see an abstract design in my head.  I started playing with wire and came up with the final pendant which is based around an abstract "S" (for Suri) that winds around the turquoise, and added in white moonstones to complement.  The piece is finished with a very light oxidation to bring out hammered textures in the S.  For earrings, I noticed that she mostly wears studs, so I made a pair of simple turquoise stud earrings.  Fingers crossed we see her wearing them!

The Giveaway!
Win a pair of earrings similar to the studs pictured here!
Oh, I love this part! The part where one of my lucky blog readers gets to win something fabulous! Are you ready!! CD Giveaway!

When you find something beautiful share it with the world! That's what I'm about to do, and one of my lucky fans is going to win a great prize.

Gorgeous stage set up!

I love music, all kinds of music, but what really gets me going is finding music that comes from someone else's soul and meshes with mine. Such an amazing thing! Last summer I had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Anna Johnson perform at a local coffee house. I had heard a few of her songs via Facebook which I enjoyed but after hearing her live I was a smitten kitten. She is a very talented songwriter with an amazing voice, not to mention a total sweetheart! Anna plays the acoustic guitar and sings along side her sister Julia (violin/back up vocals), her husband David (classical guitar), her drummer Chris and base guitarist Jason.

Making beautiful music!

Last Thursday I saw her live again at her cd release party! I had invited my mother-in-law and mother to attend the show with me and we scored front row seats. She sang some of my favorites like "This Love is Crazy" and "The Old Folks Song" along with a few that I hadn't heard before like "Inspiration" and "Road".

Goofing around after the show!

When the show was over we purchases 4 cd's and I had 1 of them signed by the entire band! Guess what? One of you will win it! That's right, I'm giving away an autographed copy of her newest album, Winding Road!

Here's how to enter for your chance to win an autographed copy of her new cd, Winding Road.
Each of the following will count as 1 entry. You may do any or all of these, the more you do the better chance you have of winning! If you are already a fan or are following us then please leave a comment anyway for your chance to win!

2. Fan me on Facebook and leave a comment here
3. Fan Anna on Facebook and leave a comment here

Trendy Tuesday

Ah, it's that time of the week again! Up for this weeks trendy Tuesday are the colors Margarita Green, Hawaiian Ocean and Vintage Khaki. Remember the treasury is clickable so if you see something you like or would like to leave a comment please feel free to click, click, click! I love this color scheme because it represents something I miss very much, the beach! Although I chose to not be so literal in the treasury I think the feel still comes across. Enjoy!

For the outfit I chose to create a look that was easy and beautiful. I love the wide legged trouser jeans with cute flats and a floral top. The jewelry pulls the colors together and is simple enough for everyday wear.

Prizes All Around!

First of all Thank you so much everyone who has been sending love and prayers on twitter and FB. I was in a car accident yesterday morning and am home in a neck brace for the next three days. While backing out of my driveway (to visit my Grandmother who's in the hospital) I was hit from the side by a car who's driver didn't see me. I'm mostly fine but have a very sore neck and am not allowed to drive for three days while the muscles in my neck heal. So, it's been a stressful time here.

Since computer work is easier for me to handle I decided to continue with the blog posts for this week. Thank you ahead of time for your patience in getting out your prizes. Ok, here we go....

Thank you to everyone who entered! I'm doing the results a little differently this time around, that means you ALL get a prize but only one of you gets the ring! Ready?

The winner of the ring is...

Congratulations MANDY! You win the ring!!!
DM me your address on twitter and I'll get your package out as soon as I can.

Now for the rest of you! Only 6 of you entered and I feel you deserve a reward for being so loyal to me :) So, I'm awarding you each with a $5 credit good towards anything in my shop! Just contact me with what you'd like and I'll adjust the listings for you.
How fun!!

Thanks again everyone! Huge Hugs!

Freshening Up Our Living Room

I know it isn't the furniture that makes a house a home, but dang it I can't wait to have coordinating pieces instead of the hand me down haven we have going on in here! The thought of spring has me dreaming of color and Polyvore has been helping me create some looks that I will use as guides when we set out shopping for new pieces. I'm so happy my husband loves purple because I'm dying to get an Eggplant purple sofa, or at least a cover for the one we already have. Here's a look I've created based off the purple sofa. Let me know what you think!
